Teacher Resume Guide: Certification, Grade Fit, and Classroom Numbers
Most teaching resumes describe the job instead of the teacher: "planned lessons, graded assignments, managed the classroom." Every applicant did those things β they're the license, not the differentiator. A principal reading a stack is screening for three things in order: can I legally place this person (certification), do they fit this opening (grade band and subject), and what happened in their classroom (evidence). Build the resume in that order.
The certification block, right up top
Like a nursing license, teaching certification is a gate, not a detail β give it its own section directly after the summary instead of folding it into education:

Endorsements: ESL Supplemental Β· Gifted & Talented (30-hr)
State, certificate type, grade band, subject, endorsements. Endorsements deserve their own line β ESL and special education endorsements decide interviews at many schools. If you're certified in one state and applying in another, say what transfers plainly ("eligible for reciprocity via NASDTEC") rather than hoping nobody asks.
Make the fit readable in two seconds
Principals hire for a specific opening β "8th-grade math," not "educator." Your summary line should answer the fit question immediately:
β "Passionate, dedicated educator committed to fostering lifelong learning in every child."
β "Middle school math teacher, 6 years (7thβ8th grade, including 3 years teaching Algebra I to advanced 8th graders); Texas 7β12 Math certified."
The first version could open any of two hundred resumes in the pile; the second matches an opening. Tailor the emphasis per posting β the same career reads "STAAR-tested grades" for one school and "advanced/accelerated sections" for another.
Quantify the classroom β honestly scoped
Teaching has real numbers; the trick is claiming only the ones that were yours:
β "Taught English and created engaging lessons that improved student achievement."
β "Taught 5 sections of 10th-grade English (148 students); my sections' STAAR pass rate rose from 78% to 89% over two years."
β "Improved school test scores."
β "Co-wrote the 6th-grade reading intervention block now used by all four sections; students in my group gained 1.4 grade levels (MAP) in one year."
Scope is the credibility signal: my sections, my intervention group, the unit I wrote. Beyond scores, the same rule covers the rest of the job β class sizes and sections, curriculum you authored that others adopted, clubs and teams with headcounts, family-communication systems, committee work with an outcome. Duties everyone shares ("attended staff meetings") get cut; the verb-plus-number rule applies to teaching more than most fields.
New teachers: student teaching is the experience section
The no-experience problem has a teaching-specific answer: your placement was supervised practice, so format it like a job:

Planned and taught 3 units solo, including 4 full-takeover weeks (5 sections, 140 students); led 12 parent conferences; co-taught in an inclusion classroom with a SPED co-teacher.
Then add every hour you've spent in front of kids β substitute teaching, tutoring, coaching, camp leadership β with headcounts. Hiring committees weight real classroom time over coursework every time.
What to cut
- The philosophy-of-education paragraph β save it for the interview, where it belongs.
- Every PD workshop β list what the posting cares about (structured literacy training, AVID, PBIS); the rest lives in your renewal file.
- "Passionate about children" β it's the field's emptiest clichΓ©; the evidence above says it better.
