How to Write a Resume With No Work Experience

A practical guide from the team behind PlainResume, the free resume builder.

"No experience" almost never means no material. It means your material doesn't have job titles attached yet. A first resume is built from the same thing every resume is built from โ€” evidence that you show up, take responsibility, and produce results. Here's where to find that evidence and how to phrase it.

What counts as experience (more than you think)

Write bullets about results, not duties

The single biggest upgrade for an early-career resume is turning "what I was supposed to do" into "what happened because I did it".

โœ— "Responsible for social media for the hiking club."

โœ“ "Ran the hiking club's Instagram; grew followers from 80 to 450 in one semester and filled every trip's 20 spots."

โœ— "Worked on a group project about local businesses."

โœ“ "Led a 4-person team surveying 30 local businesses; presented findings to the town's chamber of commerce."

Numbers make small things credible. "Tutored two students weekly for a year" beats "tutoring experience".

Structure for a first resume

  1. Contact info, then a two-sentence summary naming the role you want and your strongest evidence.
  2. Education near the top (it's your biggest credential right now โ€” include relevant coursework and GPA if it helps).
  3. Experience โ€” projects, volunteering, and informal work, formatted exactly like jobs: what, where, when, bullets.
  4. Skills โ€” concrete and honest: software, languages, certifications, tools. Skip "hard worker".

Keep it to one page, and keep the layout simple โ€” a single column with standard headings also keeps it readable by applicant tracking systems.

Frequently asked questions

What do I put on a resume if I've never had a job?

Class projects, personal projects, volunteering, clubs, sports, caregiving, informal work. Format each like a job: role, organization, dates, and result-focused bullets.

How long should a first resume be?

One page. White space reads better than padding.

Should I write a summary with no experience?

Yes โ€” two sentences naming your target role and your strongest concrete evidence. It frames everything below it.
