HVAC Technician Resume Guide: EPA Type, Service vs Install

The short answer: A service manager screens an HVAC resume for three things: your EPA 608 certification with the type (Universal, or I / II / III), whether you're a service tech or an install tech, and the equipment class you've actually worked โ€” residential, light commercial, commercial, or refrigeration. Put that block under your name, then prove diagnostics with the measurements you take and the service numbers you know. "Experienced HVAC technician" tells a manager nothing about which van they can put you in.

HVAC hiring is seasonal and urgent โ€” someone is trying to cover calls before the next heat wave or cold snap. The resume that wins is the one that lets a manager decide in fifteen seconds which work they can hand you.

The credential block: type matters, not just "EPA certified"

Federal rules require Section 608 certification to handle regulated refrigerants, and the type determines what you can legally work on โ€” Type I for small appliances, Type II for high-pressure, Type III for low-pressure, Universal for all three. Writing just "EPA certified" makes a manager ask, and the answer might be Type I when they need Type II. Licensing beyond that varies by state and locality, so name yours if you hold one, and keep the whole thing in a block under your name for the same reason every credentialed trade does โ€” it's a gate, not a footnote. Service or install? Say which

Service techs are hired for diagnosis and customer handling; install crews are hired for throughput and finish quality โ€” changeouts per week, duct fabrication and sealing, brazing, line sets, startup and commissioning. If you do both, say the split and which one you want, because a service manager filling a van and an install lead filling a crew are reading for different evidence.

Name the equipment class

Equipment class is the single fastest filter in this trade. A shop that runs rooftop units on retail contracts and a shop doing residential changeouts want different rรฉsumรฉs, and the second-fastest filter is whether you've worked the brands they service.

Diagnostics: the measurements are the evidence

What separates technicians is what they can find, so name the checks you actually run: superheat and subcooling when charging, static pressure and airflow on delivery complaints, combustion analysis on furnaces, electrical troubleshooting on motor and control circuits, refrigerant recovery and leak detection. Then attach numbers where the company tracked them โ€” first-time fix, callback rate, calls per day, maintenance agreements you kept renewing. Callbacks are the HVAC version of a mechanic's comeback rate: they prove you're clean as well as fast, and the same rule applies about never inventing a figure, because the interview will include a walk-through of a diagnosis. If your shop measured you on ticket average or add-on sales, state that honestly too โ€” it's real, and some employers screen on it.

Not an electrician, and that's fine

HVAC work involves substantial electrical troubleshooting โ€” contactors, capacitors, control circuits, motor windings โ€” but licensing and scope differ from the electrical trade, and claiming otherwise reads badly to anyone in either field. Describe the electrical work you do within HVAC scope precisely and let it stand on its own; it's a genuinely valuable skill without the borrowed title. Field-site credentials matter here too, the way they do on any job site.

Lead with the program and your EPA 608 type โ€” passing 608 before you apply is the single highest-leverage thing an entry-level candidate can do.
